How (and why) I reduced my possessions
People always think building a new wardrobe requires a lot
of money. That’s not always true. One may need to take a closer look in his/her
wardrobe and find those great items that are required to build a capsule. We
all have great jeans, a simple black tee or one stylish top in nude or beige which
can be paired with anything. You just need to select those items and buy other
pieces keeping these items in mind.
But these methods didn’t work for me. When I decided to
build a capsule wardrobe, first thing that I had to do was to take out all my
clothes and dump them outside! Well, not literally, I donated most of them, and
the rest were dumped. I didn’t like any of my clothes. None. All of them gave
me anxiety and stress and sometimes hives! I knew I had to spend a lot to build it from
scratch. So, I kept in mind that nothing is perfect in the world. My closet
does not need to be pintersty or instagramy. It should just fulfill my necessity
of not being naked in front of a roomful of my colleagues at work. Obviously, I wished I could go to the beach
with a flowy one thing or another on my back and some glittery flip-flops to
walk on the sand. And my clothes may
transform me into a chick fashionista with not a care in the world...
Huh! Who am I kidding! Clothes CAN NOT do that! So, I had to
get realistic and wrote down my expectations from my minimal closet.
My closet goals:
- Pieces that don’t get dirty easily (I mean they can get dirty, just can’t show it!)
- Pieces that last long. I mean really, really long.
- And the final one…..of course they must fit with each other.
Anybody who comes from a sunny weather with mild breeze is a
fan of colorful dresses. I was no exception. And that’s not all as I was also going to move in
a country which has some of the best beaches in the world along with sun, sand and
wind! So, all black and grey and beige will not really fit there. After lot of
thinking, plotting and searching I came up with a list and hoped, prayed and betted my life that it would work.
Because if I can't make things work
just the way they are, I have to be naked probably as I dont want to spend another ton of money on clothes.
About, the rest of the stuffs, there were none. At least not much. All our apartments ( it's plural because of this) came fully furnished with the minimum amounts of pots and pans, we barely had any care for our skin (or health, for that matter, which I plan to change as soon as possible) so nada for makeup and skin care item except only for few toiletries.
So, wish me luck! Let’s see how this decluttered life suits me!
